Jiang Yao, a 10-year-old girl from Macao, is taking part in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Summer Camp for Cantonese Opera to enrich her one-year study of Cantonese Opera. There are around 100 children from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao like her participating in the camp.

At the camp, kids have basic classes on Cantonese Opera, such as singing, skills training and posture, and visit both the Guangdong Museum and Cantonese Opera Art Museum, getting an immersive experience on one of the region’s tradition art forms.

On August 1st, students including Jiang Yao demonstrated the results of their study on stage at Guangzhou’s Museum of Cantonese Opera. They performed opera highlights (called Zhezixi in Chinese). Some were waving their Shuixiu (long white silk sleeves) gracefully, some wielded Huaqiang (a short spear used in ancient China) nimbly, while others still sang passionately, to applause and laughter from the audience.

“We wish to create more chances for these kids to experience our traditional culture and provide a stage for them to show off their understanding of it.” said Zhu Qingqiang, director of the Drama Department of the Guangdong Dance and Drama College.

These kids will soon go to Macao and Hong Kong to give another two performances.
