27 taxi drivers forced to retake driver exams

Strict new regulations for taxi drivers in Guangzhou have now been in effect for an entire month, and in that time, the number of registered complaints or instances of rule breaking by taxi drivers has reached 1,286.

Drivers start off with 0 points and are given demerit points once they break the rules, including refusing passengers or refusing to use taxi meters. In just one month alone, 27 taxi drivers have already received 20 demerit points, three times the number of taxi drivers who amassed 20 demerit points in the previous month. These drivers are now required to retake exams to re-qualify for their taxi licenses.

Also, 13 taxi drivers were caught hiring unqualified fill-in drivers or tampering with taxi meters, with all 13 to have their qualifications revoked and barred from working in the same industry for five years.
