As many of you know, Yuexiu District is very competitive in education and has been the center of elementary education in Guangzhou for decades. Finland has one of the most advanced elementary education systems in the world, therefore in order to promote exchange and cooperation between Guangzhou and Finland as well as to gain and share more experience around the field of education from each other, a Finnish education symposium was held during the Sixth Yuexiu District Education Festival in Guangzhou on the afternoon of Jan. 17, 2018.

During the symposium, experts from China and Finland agreed that education in China can benefit widely from others’ strong points, whilst still focusing more on the inheritance of strong feautures of traditional culture.

Jari Andersson, headmaster at Sylvään koulu Heidi Saarinen, believes that education is universal and ranking tables should not be the tool for comparison between education institutes in different regions and countries.

At the symposium, Jari also shared the key factors behind talent cultivation and personalized education in Finland. He said that students at his school will spend roughly seven hours on homework every week and that all schools in Finland offer innovative curricula.

On the morning of Jan. 18, Finnish education experts also visited Dongfeng East Road Elementary School in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou and gave presentations to the students in class. Finnish course design expert Matti Rossi used light bulb to simulate the sun and a grain of salt salt, millet, corn, etc to present the planets of the solar system, giving the students a much more vivid understanding of just how large the solar system is.

Yuexiu District Education Festival is one important approach the district takes in order to advance its education quality. The sixth iteration of the festival kicked off on Dec. 11, 2017 and will last until April 2018. The theme for this year’s festival is the development of students’ individualization through a more international outlook.
