Shenzhen plans 4 new Metro lines for high-tech park

In addition to the existing two Metro lines in service and the three lines under construction, four new Metro lines are planned to pass through the high-tech park in Nanshan District where millions of people work and live.

The Shenzhen Municipal Transport Commission said recently that it is planning another four Metro lines that will go underneath the high-tech park, making the area even more convenient with nine Metro lines.

However, no detailed plans of the newly proposed Metro lines have been released yet.

Besides the operational Metro Line 1 and 2, three lines are set to go through the area. The extension of Metro Line 9 will connect the high-tech park with Qianhai via Shekou.

Metro Line 13, which will start construction this year, starts at Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint and extends to Bao’an District. Covering approximately 22.4 kilometers, the line will have at least 14 stations.

Metro Line 15, with both terminus and terminal stations in Qianhai, will connect the high-tech park with Houhai and Qianhai in Nanshan and central Bao’an. Both Metro Lines 13 and 15 are north-south oriented, linking the high-tech park to Shiyan, Liuxiandong of Xili and some other northern areas.

Currently, the road and transportation networks around the high-tech park area do not meet the urgent demand of people working in the high-tech park.

The main roads, including Shennan Boulevard, Binhai Boulevard, Shahe West Road, Nanhai Boulevard, Keyuan Boulevard and Beihuan Boulevard, are often congested, especially during rush hours.

Gaoxinyuan, Shenda and Keyuan Metro stations are serving the high-tech park but they hardly cover the middle and northern parts of the high-tech park.

Since the high-tech park area is not equipped with adequate parking spaces for buses, it can be hard to have public buses starting at the high-tech park and passing buses are often crowded with passengers during peak hours.

In a bid to tackle traffic problems, the transport commission pledged to upgrade the area’s road and public transportation networks. More bus stations, parking lots, sidewalks and expressways are expected to be built in the technology park.

Also, traffic police will get tougher on drivers that violate traffic rules, park illegally or block the road.
