The Peranakan Chinese generally refers to people of mixed Chinese and Malay heritage. They are descendants of Chinese immigrants who moved to the Malay Archipelago between the 15th and 17th centuries, and are also known as Baba-Nyonyas (Baba for men and Nyonya for women). This unique community forms a cornerstone of Singapore’s history.
