Cantonese constitute 12% of Peru’s population

On July 28, the Consulate General of Peru in Guangzhou held a reception to celebrate the 196th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Peru.

“Guangdong and Peru share natural cultural bond. In Peru, most of the overseas Chinese are from Guangdong, and most Chinese restaurants bear a very Chinese name -- CHIFA which means to eat in Chinese. And in recent years, Peru’s national image has been well promoted in Guangdong” said Mr. Gu Xingwei, Deputy Secretary General of People’s Government of Guangdong. “Along with the deepening of reform and opening-up, Guangdong and Peru boast increasing collaboration in economy and trade, tourism and culture among other areas.”

Mr. Gamarra, Consul-general of Peru in Guangzhou, in his speech, also mentioned some facts that serve to illustrate the rich, historical and friendly relationship between China and Peru, “The ties between Peru and Guangdong goes back a long time. Nowadays thousands and thousands of families, mainly Cantonese, have been arriving to Peru, constituting today 12% of Peru’s population. Thanks to the presence of these Chinese families, Chinese culture, specifically Cantonese, is well-known in my country. In Peru we celebrate the Chinese New Year, the Dragon Boat Festival and other traditional Chinese festivals.”

Ever since the establishment of diplomatic relationship in 1971, bilateral relations between China and Peru has been enjoying long-term, stable and healthy development. Both countries maintain frequent high-level exchanges of visits with expanding cooperation in economy and trade and increasing communication in culture, science and technology, education, tourism, etc.
