8 detained for selling drugs in Shenzhen via WeChat

Eight people were recently detained by Luohu police for allegedly illegally selling drugs using WeChat as a tool, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Police officers from Cuizhu Police Station in Luohu District detained a 17-year-old drug trafficker, surnamed Guan, on June 23 after his accomplice Zou, a 34-year-old Hong Kong woman, was detained in a Luohu estate by police June 22, according to the police.

The police found 2.2 grams of crystal meth and 58.39 grams of ketamine on Guan and seized another 4.82 grams of ketamine he had hidden.

During an interrogation, Guan confessed that he had six accomplices. According to him, the ringleader was in charge of purchasing the drugs and his deputy was responsible for advertising their business via WeChat to solicit customers.

After a customer made a payment online, one of the four members of the ring that included Guan would hide the drugs at a designated location, while another member would drive, and they would send the location to the customer and so they could pick up the drugs.

They never had to meet with customers in person during the entire process. The ringleader and his deputy changed their phone numbers regularly and never added strangers to their WeChat accounts in order to avoid being tracked down by police.

Police detained three suspects in Shenzhen and another three in Qingyuan and Meizhou between June 25 and July 10. All of the eight suspects, including Guan and Zou, have confessed. The investigation into the case continues.
