GD government and people make joint efforts to protect heritage

As the main venue of Guangdong’s activities for China’s first Cultural and Natural Heritage Day, Kaiping ushered in 138 inheritors showing 69 provincial intangible cultural heritages at People’s Park on June 10 and 11.

At the central square of the park, rustic and exuberant Yingge Dance from Chaozhou attracted people’s attention and won rounds of applause. At the booths along both sides of the square, inheritors of intangible cultural heritages showed their unique skills, with huge crowds gathering around.

Kids were most interested in the displaying of how the special handicrafts were made. They watched attentively and couldn’t wait to try to make one on their own once there were chances, beating a Jinsheng Child Lion Drum, coloring a Yangjiang Kite, playing with a Foshan Festoon Lion Head, putting on a textile hat, making almond cakes…

Guided by her father, a little girl was making a stone carving work at the exhibition, drawing the attention of every visitor walking by. Her father told the visitors and reporters that her daughter was very interested in stone carving which was he did for a living, so he wanted to teach her how to make stone carving from an early age.

Apart from the exhibition of intangible cultural heritage, other activities included free treasure evaluation, intangible cultural heritage theme gala, achievement exhibition of inheritors’ training, cultural relic exhibition, photo exhibition of folk customs and Diaolous, and so on.

While the activities being held at the main venue of Kaiping was mainly about cultural heritage, activities about natural heritage was highlighted at the branch venue Danxia Mountain in Shaoguan. All these activities are held to help more people get to know more and feel more about cultural and natural heritage, so as to raise their awareness of protecting cultural and natural heritage.

A launching ceremony of the activities was held in front of the Mingshi Tower, one of the many Diaolous in Zili Village, Kaiping on the morning of June 10. Hundreds of guests and visitors attended the ceremony and viewed the Diaolous around the village. Fang Jianhong, Director General of the Department of Culture of Guangdong Province, pointed out that these activities showed the government’s determination and performance on cultural and natural heritage protection and Kaiping people’s care and support for heritage protection.
