A launching ceremony for an international smart manufacturing platform built by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology(HKUST) Fok Ying Tung Research Institute was held in Nansha on May 19. The platform aims to make Nansha, even Guangzhou, the most high-end intelligent molding industry 4.0 technology service platform and industrial cluster in China.
Developers of the platform absorbed and learned from the successful experience of the Industry-University-Research (IUR) collaboration from the UK, Hong Kong and Taiwan. They are focusing on building up a research service and incubator system of “Internet plus the new materials,” which can help Guangzhou construct an international technology innovation hub and deepen cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay area. In the future, the platform will attract domestic and foreign manufacturing talents and technology to settle in Nansha, according to Du Deqing, deputy secretary-general of Guangzhou’s government.
The core technology of the Internet of Things (IOT), advanced manufacturing, advanced materials, green energy, architecture and other areas of HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute will provide key support. They will connect with international resources, colleges in Hong Kong, and institutes of science and research. The platform will bring outstanding talented individuals and technological achievements to Guangzhou. That will contribute to building Guangzhou into an international science and technology innovation hub, according to Wu Enbo, the Associate Vice-President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
"We will build an international industrial technology and enterprises aggregation platform, in order to attract Hong Kong, Taiwan and international universities and research institutions to transform their scientific and technological achievement in Guangzhou. The platform will also expand from the molding industry to the emerging fields of photo-electronics, financial technology, and bio-medicine. The services will be more comprehensive than previously in Guangzhou and for the industries in the region of the Nansha free trade zone,” said Miu Zhengxi, the president of HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute.
