Since Hengqin issued policies on intellectual property rights protection, which aimed at promoting international recognition of local brands, on July 2016, Hengqin New Area Administration for Industry and Commerce has accepted over 500 applications for trademark registration, of which 37 trademarks have been granted a total subsidy of 78,400 yuan (US$11,443).
According to the policies, Hengqin plans to spend a minimum of 300 million yuan (US$43.7 million) on subsidizing local brands within three years. Brands that are evaluated as famous Guangdong brands or famous Chinese brands can receive subsidies of 2 million yuan (US$290,765) or 500,000 yuan (US$72,000). Up till now, there are 3,751 trademarks (130% year-on-year increase) in Hengqin with 1,123 (114% year-on-year increase) of them being registered.
