Guangdong to invest 26 bln Yuan in innovation-driven development in 2017

"In 2017 over 26 billion Yuan RMB will be invested in innovation-driven development, surpassing the amount last year," presented Zeng Zhiquan, Head of Department of Finance of Guangdong Province, at the press conference during the 5th session of the 12th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress on January 20th.

He Ningka, Director General of Guangdong Development and Reform Commission, also attended the press conference and introduced Guangdong’s current situation on developing innovation-driven strategy.

He concluded that thanks to some key global talents recruit projects such as “Pearl River Talents” recruit project, 117 innovative teams and 89 world leading talents including 5 Nobel Laureates and 2 Nobel judges have been introduced to Guangdong.

He expressed his willingness of bringing the latest LED technology to Shenzhen and speeding up the industrialization of the innovative results made by his team.

Aaron Ciechanover and Ada Yonath won Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 and 2009. Two years ago they together with their teams joined Nobel Institute of Biomedicine in Zhuhai as core scientific research teams.

During the press conference, He also introduced that in the past year Guangdong has laid stress on innovation. At present 48 disciplines in Guangdong’s universities have been listed among top 1% of ESI.

At the same time He briefed measures that would be adopted this year. Guangdong has scheduled policies to consolidate the achievements and planned to establish the national innovation center of scientific and technological industry and support Guangzhou and Shenzhen to enhance their lead in innovation, according to the latest government work report.

Also measures and policies will be taken effect to accelerate the construction of scientific technology innovation platform system and speed up the development of large-scale science facilities, including China Spallation Neutron Source in Dongguan and High-Intensity Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility in Huizhou.
