The second edition of GOAL football tournament organized by MoneyGram, global provider of innovative money transfers, concluded recently with “Future FC 1” taking home the title of Guangzhou Champions. Following the success of inaugural event in 2016, MoneyGram expanded this year’s competition to a 7-a-side tournament to enable more talented footballers representing the African community to take part in the structured competition. The event energized the local community with 44 teams participating and thousands of supporters showing up to cheer for their favourite players. The GOAL’s opening ceremony was joined by Obafemi Martins, the legendary African footballer, currently playing for Shanghai Shenhua, who officially inaugurated the competition as its ambassador.
MoneyGram GOAL culminated in grand finals weekend with the best 16 teams playing in a knockout format. Footballers representing Cameroon, Congo, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, and Guinea competed for the Grand Prize of USD 3,000, the prestigious trophy and champion’s title.
“Over the last three weeks, MoneyGram showcased its commitment to the African community by sharing their passion for football. We are happy to see the GOAL tournament growing with the second edition joined by even more players and teams taking part. It was also great to have Obafemi Martins, to join the opening ceremony. I’m sure that his presence and engagement can make a positive change to the everyday lives of the African community here in China,” says Sabrina Chan, MoneyGram’s Regional marketing lead, Asia, China and Mongolia.
“We are so happy that we won this tournament. We have been looking forward to coming back and trying to take this title for our club once again. We wanted to take this opportunity and thank MoneyGram for bringing this tournament to our community. Football is our passion and they have been able to bring together the best African teams in Guangzhou for this sport festival and allow us to showcase our talent. It was also an honour to meet the legendary footballer Obafemi Martins in person and see his support. We look forward to defending our title in 2018,” said Nelson Chidi, the captain of the winning team.
