In the wee small hours of June 8, cranes were busy constructing temporary dormitories in a marked area on Qiaozi Street in Guangzhou's Liwan District, where most locally transmitted cases were reported over the past days. Composed of 450 containers, the dorms are expected to house 2,000 front-line workers battling COVID-19 in the district.
The site is located in a low-risk area, well-ventilated and with a distance from populated areas. Each container can have up to 5 people living and will be equipped with air-conditioner, beds, quilts and mosquito nets.
The construction, which started at 12:00 on June 6, is scheduled to be completed today. As of 1:00 a.m. on June 8, 79 standard rooms have been finished.
By now, 3 primary schools and a hotel in Liwan District have been fitted out to temporarily house more than 1,000 people in total. As the number of front-line workers is increasing, providing better support for them is a key issue, it is urgent to build temporary dorms, according to local authorities.
