On March 18, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Macao Light Rapid Transit (MLRT) Hengqin Extension Line Project was held simultaneously at the Macao’s Lotus Port and Zhuhai’s Hengqin. It marks the official launch of the Hengqin Extension Line. Construction will be started in Zhuhai and Macao at the same time.
The main body of the Hengqin Extension Line consists of a viaduct, a tunnel under the river and two stations, with a total length of about 2.2 kilometers, of which the tunnel section is about 900 meters.
The line starts at HE1 Station (viaduct station) next to the Lotus Bridge Station of the MLRT Taipa Line. After going through the station, it gradually descends along the Lotus Bridge, passes the Shizimen Waterway into Hengqin via the tunnel, and ends at the underground HE2 Station at Hengqin Checkpoint.
As a major infrastructure in Macao and a large-scale public transportation project to increase the connectivity between Macao and Zhuhai, the MLRT Hengqin Extension Line is of great significance to strengthen cultural and economic exchanges between the two places.
After this line is completed and opened to traffic, passengers can quickly transfer at the Hengqin Checkpoint to take the Guangzhou–Zhuhai Intercity Railway Extension (Zhuhai-Zhuhai Airport Intercity Railway Phase I).
It will meet the growing demand from passengers in the Hengqin New Area, known as Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone. By improving commuting efficiency, the infrastructure can facilitate the two places’ integration into the "one-hour living circle" in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
