Editor’s note: the GDToday team spent a day with several expats who are working and living in different cities of Guangdong and present how they are preparing for the Chinese New Year despite of the back-and-forth Covid-19 pandemic through the ‘My Chinese New Year Style’ series.
Ghana singer, Naomi Kumo and her Jieyang husband, Xie Jun, celebrate Chinese New Year in a special way mixing African drum, Ghana Dance and curry with Teochew opera, rice dumplings and steamed fish.
Naomi Kumi came to China in 2008 and studied at university in Xi’an. She is a singer and performed at the CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala and 星光大道, a popular Chinese talent show competition.
Naomi’s husband, Xiejun, graduated from Shanghai Theatre Academy and was an actor of the Shantou Drama Troupe. They met each other through a friend’s introduction and married in 2019.
