The Terminal 1 of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is to be fully renovated in the next 6 to 8 years, and an innovative design has been put out to tender.

T1 will connect with T2 in East Pier 3, whose function will switch with T1 from domestic flights to International flights. In this way, East Piers 2 to 6 of the airport will all be for the international outbound passengers.

The refurbishment this time will focus on the ‘green concept’ by highlighting Guangzhou as a ‘thriving flower City’ and decorating some areas permanently with plants and flowers.

The Guangzhou-Shenzhen Intercity Railway and Guangfo Metro will make a stop in the East Concourse of T1. Passenger can go to Gate A01 in the first floor of the East Concourse or Gate 22 in the first floor of the main building, according to the tender document.

In addition, Metro Line 22, with a speed of 160 km/h, will pass by the west side of T1 with a station built symmetrically to the intercity railways in the east. It will only take 30 minutes to the city downtown areas and 60 minutes to other cities in the Pearl River Delta region after the 3rd phase expansion has been completed.

With a building area of 510,000 square meters, T1 has a passenger throughput of 35 million person-times. Originally, the East Pier 1 and 2 served the international flights, while Pier 3 in the middle was for the domestic flights.

By 2025, T1 is expected to receive 42 million person-times annually. By 2030, the passenger throughput in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport will reach 120 million person-times.
