17-year-old Abritip Ablet from Xinjiang participated in the first Vocational Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China held in Guangzhou between December 10th and 12th.
As a Uygur student from a technical school in Xinjiang, Abritip is not proficienct in Mandarin and misunderstood the referee’s instructions during the competition. He dismantled the whole finished product that was supposed to be only half dismantled. Although he encountered some difficulties in the competition, he decided to learn harder after going back home and try to get a better result next time.
Abritip’s father is a worker and his mother a farmer. The family now owns over 50 walnut trees which have helped them to overcome poverty this year.
The Vocational Skills Competition is recognized as the nation's first since the founding of the People's Republic of China. The three-day event has attracted 2,557 competitors in 36 delegations from across the country, according to its organizers.
