Guangzhou held UCLG World Council to support international anti-pandemic efforts

On November 11, the 2020 United Cities Local Governments (UCLG) World Council held an online special event in Guangzhou. The theme of this event was "Urban Innovation During Covid Times".

On November 11, the 2020 United Cities Local Governments (UCLG) World Council held an online special event in Guangzhou. The theme of this event was "Urban Innovation During Covid Times". This meeting was hosted by UCLG, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government. Emilia Saiz, Secretary-General of the World City and Land Organization, Octavi de la Varga, Secretary-General of the World Metropolitan Association, and Gao Yuyue, Deputy Secretary-General of Guangzhou Municipal Government attended the meeting.

Gao Yuyue said that Guangzhou will participate in international anti-pandemic operations, share experience in pandemic prevention and economic recovery with other cities, and will support it with practical actions. He also said that a sound governance system is a powerful weapon for cities to deal with public health and other issues. In addition, he said that Guangzhou will continue to host the Guangzhou International Award (Guangzhou Award) to encourage and promote global urban governance innovation.

Emilia Saiz fully affirmed the role of the "Guangzhou Award". She said that the "Guangzhou Award" provides a good opportunity for local governments and regional organizations to communicate and makes a great contribution to the promotion of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in 2030.

Octavi de la Varga believes that the "Guangzhou Award" plays a very important platform role, allowing members of UCLG to pay attention to practical issues, explore innovative urban practices and promote innovative urban governance.

Some international urban innovation experts attended this seminar, including Jose Siri (Senior Scientific Director of the “Our Earth Our Health” Urban Project of the UK Wellcome Trust Fund), Mark J. Nieuwenhuijsen (Urban Planning, Environment and Health Initiative Director of Institute of Global Health Barcelona ) and representatives of Xi’an, China. They showed some cases of fighting the pandemic, shared advanced experiences of the city's open innovation before conducting Q&A interactions and comments.
