When Peking Opera meets Cantonese Opera at Canton Tower

Featuring two major forms of traditional operas, Peking Opera and Cantonese Opera, a gala was held at the Canton Tower in Guangzhou on the evening of October 24th.

Featuring two major forms of traditional operas, Peking Opera and Cantonese Opera, a gala was held at the Canton Tower in Guangzhou on the evening of October 24th.

The gala has successfully captured the quintessence and distinctive features of both Peking and Cantonese Operas. It was attended by famous opera masters from the National Peking Opera Company including Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu, and established artists from Guangdong, such as Zeng Xiaomin, head of Guangdong Cantonese Opera House and winner of the Wenhua Award of and the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award (China’s top award for drama).

During the event, the Guangzhou Municipal Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau and the National Peking Opera Company entered into a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement to deepen the cultural cooperation between Beijing and Guangzhou in the fields of drama work creation, future talent training, cultural exchange, as well as cultural and creative product promotion.

The gala was guided by Guangzhou Municipal People's Government, and organized by the Information Office of Guangzhou Municipal People's Government, Guangzhou Municipal Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau, as well as the National Peking Opera Company.

With its fascinating and artistic accompanying music, singing and costumes, the Peking Opera is China's national opera. Full of Chinese cultural facts, the opera presents the audience with an encyclopedia of Chinese culture, as well as unfolding stories, beautiful paintings, exquisite costumes, graceful gestures and martial arts.

Cantonese opera is one of the major Chinese opera categories. It is a traditional Chinese art form that originating in southern China's Cantonese culture, and involves music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics and acting. Today it is not only very popular in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong and Macao, but also performed in Southeast Asia, Oceania, America and, in fact, any country where Cantonese people live.
