Michelin Guide launches 2020 Guangzhou edition

Two restaurants received two Michelin stars each, and 10 restaurants earned one Michelin star each, taking the total number of starred restaurants to 12, up from 11 last year.

The Michelin Guide Guangzhou 2020 was released in Guangzhou today (September 22nd). Two restaurants received two Michelin stars each, and 10 restaurants earned one Michelin star each, taking the total number of starred restaurants to 12, up from 11 last year.

Two restaurants, Lingnan House and Imperial Treasure Fine Chinese Cuisine, were newly presented with one and two Michelin stars respectively. Five restaurants newly received a Bib Gourmand recommendation, and many other have retained their stars. This shows the catering industry in Guangzhou is developing steadily and vigorously, according to Gwendal Poullennec, Michelin Guide's international director.

Two new rising stars at a glance

Imperial Treasure Fine Chinese Cuisine

The restaurant received one star in 2019 and since then has propelled itself to a new echelon. Affiliated with a Singapore catering group, Imperial Treasure Fine Chinese Cuisine attaches great importance to the selection of ingredients. Its crispy suckling pig with sticky rice, shrimp balls with white truffles and cuisine in seasonal menus are well worth a try.

Lingnan House

Drawing inspiration from the regional classics of Guangdong province, Lingnan House serves fine-dining Cantonese cuisine executed with carefully sourced, organic and sustainable ingredients in an interactive environment. The restaurant has an open kitchen, and diners can watch the cooking process such as how a goose is roasted.

Two one-star restaurants at high-end hotels

Yu Yue Heen, Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou

Yu Yue Heen was awarded one Michelin star for the third consecutive year since 2018 when the guide was first launched in Guangzhou. Located on the 71st floor of the hotel, Yu Yue Heen offers authentic Cantonese cuisine with unsurpassed views of the city's skyline and the Pearl River within a tranquil space. Using the freshest and finest seasonal ingredients, Chinese Executive Sous Chef of the hotel Mai Zhixiong has led the team in maintaining the highest culinary standards. Favorite signature dishes include the Barbecued Pork Belly, Marinated Chicken with Deep-fried Minced Ginger as well as Sliced Lamb with Sesame and Soya Sauce.

Lai Heen, The Ritz-Carlton, Guangzhou

Lai Heen, the signature Cantonese restaurant of the hotel, received one star for the third consecutive year from the guide. Lai Heen, helmed by Chef Aiden who has over two decades of culinary experience, gives priority to freshness of seasonal ingredients to showcase exquisite Cantonese delicacies. The constantly evolving classic and contemporary menu features dishes in authentic Cantonese tradition, with careful balancing of colors, aroma, textures and taste in each dish. Meanwhile, the hotel's Italian restaurant LIMONI retains the Michelin Plate honor for the third consecutive year.

Other than the 12 restaurants with Michelin stars, 31 restaurants received a Bib Gourmand recommendation for "exceptionally good food at moderate prices," and another 46 restaurants were given a Michelin Plate for solid cooking, but not quite up to star level standards. These cover about 20 cuisines including Cantonese, Sichuan, Indian, Indonesian, Malaysian, Singaporean, Spanish and Thai, a reflection of Guangzhou's diverse and rich dining scene.

The guide also gave out its first Young Chef Award and Service Award in China to commend the professional spirit and persistence of catering practitioners in Guangzhou. The two awards wer given to Chef Situ Jianquan from Lingnan House and Ms. Mao Xiaoxiang from Bingsheng Private Kitchen respectively.
