On September 18th, the 2020 Pan-Pearl River Delta Regional Cooperation Executive Chiefs Joint Meeting was held in Sanya, south China's Hainan Province with the theme of "sharing the opportunities of the Hainan Free Trade Port and promoting the joint development of the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region".

The meeting attracted governors, chairmen and chief executives of nine provinces (or regions), Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR, government delegations from the Pan-Pearl River Delta (PPRD), and representatives of national ministries and commissions.

During the meeting, governors and chief executives had in-depth discussions on building a modern transport network together composed of large-scale ports, corridors and centers; and promoting high-quality development for regional cooperation within the PPRD Region.

The progress that has been made since 2019 and a work report from the Secretariat of the Pan-Pearl River Delta Cooperation (PPRD) and Development Forum was also reviewed at the meeting.

According to the meeting, to build the whole of Hainan Island into a globally influential free trade port also provides important opportunities for the PPRD members. The development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Hainan Free Trade Port also helps to boost the regional economic growth of the PPRD.

Under the above strategic opportunities, PPRD members should enhance their cooperation on economic platforms, infrastructure construction, industry partnerships as well as ecology and tourism.

The joint meeting will be hosted by Sichuan next year. And the 13th PPRD Regional Cooperation & Development Forum and Economic & Trade Fair will be held online on September 24th, which can be watched via mainstream online media of the PPRD members.

Background:

The meeting is a platform launched in 2004 for regional cooperation between eight provinces, one autonomous region and two special administrative regions – collectively known as the "9+2" – located in the PPRD, namely the provinces of Fujian, Guangdong, Guizhou, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan and Yunnan; the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, accounting for more than one-third of the country's population and gross domestic product.
