The 2020 Science and Technology Week is already underway in Guangzhou between August 23rd and 29th, featuring over 300 fun and instructive events promoting popular science and technology.

A total of 154 science popularization bases, colleges, universities, scientific research institutions and other enterprises across 11 districts in the city will hold all kinds of science popularization events in the fields of emergency rescue, network security, intellectual property protection, earthquake prevention and disaster reduction, food and drug safety, and more during the week. Here are some event highlights:

Exhibitions on the fight against COVID-19

Three exhibitions on the fight against COVID-19 are being held at the Guangdong Science Center, demonstrating Guangdong's battle against COVID-19 with science and technology. Exhibits include quarantine sickbeds, reusable N95 masks, AI image aided diagnosis systems and the progress of vaccines. During the week, if you visit the three exhibitions, take photos of them, and send the photos to the WeChat account of "广州科普", you stand a chance of winning some gifts in a lucky draw.

Science nights

Time: August 29th

Science night events on different themes will be held at a dozen science popularization venues across the city on the evening of August 29th, including Guangzhou Zoo, South China Botanical Garden, Baiyun Mountain, Haizhu Wetland Park, and Guangzhou University's planetarium.

At the Guangdong Science Center, you will be able to visit the NASA Neighborhood Earth Exhibition and the low-carbon & new energy vehicles experience hall, watch science popularization shows, participate in DIY activities, and challenge yourself to fly a drone. Online science popularization carnival

Time: August 22nd - 26th

If you do wish, you don't even have to leave the comfort of your couch to enjoy studying science and win gifts such as science books and tickets to the Botanical Garden and Guangzhou Zoo by taking part in the online carnival. You can experience VR technology, visit science popularization bases and exhibitions online, watch micro-videos on COVID-19, and vote for your favorite science centers.

Pearl River Science Forum on driverless technology

Time: 14:30-16:00, August 29th

Professionals from GOSUNCN WeRide, two leading companies in the fields of cooperative vehicle infrastructure system and driverless technology, will share the technology and demonstrate the real operational scenes of pilotless driving on Guangzhou's International Bio Island.

The sci-tech week in the city forms part of the 20th National Science and Technology Week this year which focuses on achievements in fighting the COVID-19 epidemic through science and technology.

The theme of the week is "prevailing over an epidemic with science and technology, and empowering the country with innovation." During the week, science popularization events focus on showcasing the significant role of science and technology in China's battle against COVID-19.

Launched in 2001, the National Science and Technology Week has held 19 consecutive sessions, becoming the most influential popular science event in the country.
