Known as a pioneer in the reform of traditional Chinese painting, Gao Jianfu founded the Lingnan School of Painting and revived the dying ink-brush tradition by introducing oil painting techniques. After the Revolution of 1911, he gradually emerged as a rising painting star and was devoted to the dissemination of revolutionary ideas and art education with support from Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the renowned statesman who led the revolution that ended imperial rule in China. Lingnan School of Painting, an artists' group co-founded by Gao Jianfu, Gao Qifeng and Chen Shuren in Guangdong, has also continued to develop and become a new painting genre with extensive social influences.

Gao was the teacher of famous painter Guan Shanyue, after whom the national art museum Guan Shanyue Art Museum is named. Holding an exhibition of the teacher's works at the Guan Shanyue Art Museum is undoubtedly the best way to commemorate this great painting master.

In 2019, an exhibition organized by the Guangzhou Museum of Art to mark the 140th anniversary of the birth of Gao won the Excellent Project Prize issued by the National Ministry of Culture and Tourism during that year's art museums' exhibition season.

The exhibition will last until August 16th.
