On July 16, the Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau held a press conference on the results achieved in the campaign to crack down sneak shot equipment. The police found that in many cases, pinhole cameras were attached to a large number of daily necessities to practice deception.

Public security authorities arrested 74 suspects involved, with 54 currently under criminal detention, and they seized more than 10,000 sets of illegal monitoring and filming equipment on May 29. These included pinhole cameras, wireless mini-headsets, and even lighters, belts, watches, ceiling lamps, clothes, and mahjong gambling machines which are equipped with pinhole cameras.

A mineral water bottle, for example,may look like a common plastic bottle with drinking water inside. However, look carefully and you’ll find criminals have modified it by inserting a tiny pinhole camera in the middle part of the bottle. They concealed it with the product label, and then used this device to take sneak photos of people going about their daily life.

Thermal cups are another example. The pinhole camera integrates with the font of the label, and the switch for charging is covered by the bottom cover of the cup.

According to Guangzhou police, the gang mainly produce, process and sell these devices in Guangzhou, with online and offline channels. Modified eavesdropping or sneak shot equipment can be sold at a high price. For example, the above-mentioned bottle can be sold at hundreds or even thousands of RMB.

The police reminded everyone that in daily life, the purchase, sale or use of eavesdropping or sneak shot equipment should be eliminated, any of which shall be deemed an illegal act. If you have relevant information, please report to the police as soon as possible.
