Rainstorms sweep across Guangdong, classes suspended

It seems that Guangdong has been wet for the past month. Even if it is sunny in the morning, thunderstorms may suddenly arrive at noon. In the early hours of this morning, many places across Guangdong have issued red weather warnings, the most severe of China's four-tier color-coded weather warning system.

According to Guangdong Weather, these places have announced to suspend classes:

Guangzhou: Conghua, Zengcheng and Huadu district;

Shenzhen: except for boarding school and kindergartens, other schools should suspend classes;

Huizhou: Huidong, Longmen, and Boluo county;

Qingyuan: Fogang and Yangshan county;

Meizhou: Pingyuan county;

Shanwei: Haifeng, Lufeng, Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone;

Zhuhai: Doumen district.

Over these next two days, Guangdong is expected to see heavy rains across the province.

On June 8th(Monday), northern Guangdong, the Pearl River Delta, Yangjiang, Maoming, Jieyang, and Shanwei will see torrential rains. There will be heavy rains in Yunfu and Shantou, with a chance of rainstorms. The Leizhou Peninsula will remain cloudy, with a chance of thundery showers.

On June 9th (Tuesday), there will be torrential rains in northern Guangdong as well as the central and northern Pearl River Delta, with a chance of scattered rainstorms. Yangjiang and Maoming will see heavy rain or rainstorms. The remainder of the province is forecast to see thundery showers, with a chance of scattered heavy rain.

On June 10th(Wednesday), the central and western parts of the Pearl River Delta and northern Guangdong will see heavy rains, with a chance of scattered downpours. The remainder of the province is expected to remain overcast with a chance of thundery showers or scattered heavy rain.

General precaution to take during a rainstorm

Do not drive through low-lying areas;

Avoid walking or driving near any sewage outlets, pits or holes;

Guangdong has many overhead power lines, please note the following advice:

Never take shelter from rain beneath transformers or aerial wire clusters;

Avoid tall trees or billboards near power supply lines;

Exercise caution around telegraph poles and cable-stayed iron wires;

Do not wade through water if you are not sure whether there could be electric wires which have become submerged.

Guangdong is at risk of landslide and flooding, please pay extra attention to your environment and any hazards. The province has seen a lot of rain and the water content in the soil is high. Avoid low lying areas, and hiking wherever possible over the next few days and weeks.
