A number of Guangdong’s international sister cities are facing great challenges with the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. While coordinating pandemic prevention, economic and social development, Guangdong has been playing an active role in international anti-pandemic assistance.

As of May 28th, Guangdong’s aid has given Asia, Europe, the Americas, Oceania, and Africa support. Masks, protective clothing and more were sent to 9 governmental departments, 28 sister provinces/states, and 3 friendship organizations (institutions) across 34 countries.

Cities across Guangdong have also donated medical supplies to over 100 sister cities and friendly cities across nearly 70 countries on five continents, which further strengthened Guangdong’s existing friendship and cooperation with them.

"Only through solidarity can we overcome challenges"

On April 17th, a plane carrying supplies from China landed at a military airport on the outskirts of Minsk, the capital of Belarus. Among the supplies were medical gloves, forehead thermometers, and protective clothing provided by Guangdong.

"I’m grateful to the help from our friends in Guangdong. This means a lot, because only through solidarity can we overcome the challenges." said Logashuk, Vice Governor of State of Minsk.

"In solidarity, we work together to fight the pandemic"

On April 9th, Guangdong’s aid packages arrived in Istanbul, Guangdong’s sister province in Turkey. The Chinese Consulate-General in Istanbul stated on its official Instagram, "During this special period, Guangdong didn’t forget their friends. It’s high time for such unity. Let us work together to fight the pandemic. Stay strong, Turkey! Stay strong, Istanbul!"

"Many thanks to Guangdong for offering timely assistance"

On May 8th, a ceremony was held to mark the receipt of aid packages from Guangdong to Guayas, Ecuador was held at the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil.

Carlos Luis Morales, Prefect of Guayas Province and Zhang Tao, Chinese Consulate-General in Guayaquil (Ecuador) attended the ceremony. “Guayas is the province where novel coronavirus has struck most severely in Ecuador. I sincerely thank our sister province Guangdong for its timely assistance,” said Morales.

Carlos Luis Morales, Prefect of Guayas Province tweeted to express his sincere gratitude to Guangdong.

"The pandemic will not hinder cooperation, but only enhance friendship"

On May 20th, medical supplies from Guangdong arrived in Mendoza Province, Argentina.

“I’m deeply touched by the generous help offered by Guangdong province. The pandemic will not prevent us from continuing to cooperate. On the contrary, this difficult period will only strengthen the friendship between our peoples," Rodolfo Suárez, Governor of Mendoza Province said in the letter of thanks delivered to Guangdong.

"Love across the miles"

On the morning of May 25th, a chartered plane carrying medical supplies arrived at Fiji Nadi International Airport.

These supplies are for the countries in the South Pacific countries and regions, including Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and French Polynesia to combat COVID-19. Among the supplies were donations provided by the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Guangdong People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

Setting off from Shanghai and after undergoing many procedures, the materials finally arrived in the South Pacific after nearly 8 weeks.

From mid-April to late May, aid packages from Guangdong have arrived in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).

“We will make full use of the assistance provided by China, work together to beat the pandemic, and build a community of shared future,” said Livinson A. Taulung, Secretary of Health and Social Affairs, FSM.
