The institute is located at Sun Yat-san University. Supported by the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce, it has attracted multiple universities, live stream e-commerce platforms, experts and mainstream media.

It will participate in setting up industry standards as well as evaluation systems, helping businesses in Guangzhou to transform their services. It will also focus on establishing a talent training system for live stream e-commerce, providing talent with training and career planning. In addition, the institute is expected to contribute toward policy-making based on its research on the development of the industry and into current policies.

Wei Min, deputy director-general of the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce pointed out that it is crucial for Guangzhou’s businesses to follow the trend of live stream e-commerce to achieve all-round transformation, which will further revitalize the city’s image as the ‘Millennium Commercial Capital’. “We expect the institute to fully integrate resources in production, education and research, and feature on interdisciplinary development,” added Wei.

Professor Zhang Zhi’an, a well-known scholar in the field of journalism and dean of the Communication and Design Faculty of Sun Yat-sen University, will serve as the first director of the institute. “We hope to make breakthroughs in the institute’s systems, promote cooperation between companies, universities and research institutes, and to make strides in talent training and other fields,” said Zhang, “We want to contribute to economic development strategy, as well as to explore the cross-cutting fields of interdisciplinary construction.”

Live stream e-commerce unleashed great potential in terms of consumption during the pandemic, making it a strong engine for industrial and economic transformation, as well as a market hot-spot. With the application of 5G technology, the industry is expected to see explosive development.

On March 25th, the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce issued a plan for Guangzhou’s live stream e-commerce development (2020-2022), proposing to establish the city as a ‘live stream e-commerce capital’ making use of the city’s complete supply chain and large quantity of different commodities. Academics and experts said that the institute will provide great intellectual support to Guangzhou’s live stream e-commerce industry.
