On March 11th, Guangzhou announced plans to build a pedestrian bridge across the Pearl River, connecting the east bank of Ersha Island and the Canton Tower.
Since it opened to the public in 2010, the Canton Tower has become a Guangzhou landmark and tourist hot spot attracting millions of visitors each year. The construction of this bridge is one of the strategies to better link the tower with its surrounding areas, such as the parks museums and music venues of Ersha island and Party Pier. Visitors can explore the city more conveniently, especially its energetic nightlife.
According to the plan, the project will see investment of approximately 195-million-yuan and is slated for completion in June in 2021.
The developer has released three deign drafts for the bridge, seeking the public’s feedback.
Plan 1: leaping fish
Design concept: from above the bridge looks like a fish leaping out of the water
Plan 2: embracing the future
Design concept: The semicircular structure will look like the sun during daytime, while forming a round moon at night. The two semi-circles form an embrace of the future.
Plan 3: reflection on the Pearl River
Design concept: the bridge will mimic the shape of the Canton Tower, looking very much like a reflection of the tower on the Pearl River.
