Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department announced at a press conference on November 6th, that Guangdong police have closed over 3,030 cases relating to prostitution and detained over 7,770 suspects, including 3 foreign prostitutes.

Spokesman for Guangdong police stated that police in Foshan destroyed a cross-border prostitution ring in July this year. More than 180 suspects were arrested during the operation.

According to Foshan police, the prostitution ring had been soliciting customers through social media, such as WeChat group chats.

Furthermore, police in Yangjiang also busted a prostitution ring in August this year, detaining 110 suspects and 5 million RMB. Yangjiang police disclosed that the suspects had offered sex services through a technology company.

In addition, Guangdong police solved more than 5,660 gambling cases and 4,550 food, drug and environmental protection cases from January to October this year.

According to related law and regulations in China, people involved in prostitution will face the punishments below:

1) A prostitute or a person consorting with a prostitute shall be detained for not less than 10 days but not more than 15 days and may, in addition, be subjected to a maximum fine of¥5,000; if the circumstances are relatively minor, she or he shall be detained for not more than 5 days or be fined not more than ¥500.

2) A person who, at a public place, solicits customers for prostitution shall be detained for not more than five days or be fined not more than ¥500.

3) A person who seduces, shelters or introduces another person to engage in prostitution shall be detained for not less than 10 days but not more than 15 days and may, in addition, be subjected to a maximum fine of ¥5,000; if the circumstances are relatively minor, he shall be detained for not more than five days or be fined not more than ¥500.
