An ongoing exhibition of 57 works by Guangdong artist Wenzhi Zhang at the Yueyi Art Museum in Foshan features the 7,000-year-old craft of Chinese lacquer.

The “Daqi as Medium: Wenzhi Zhang’s Lacquer Works Exhibition” kicked off at the museum on August 11 and will run through the 25th of this month. The artworks were created by Zhang between 2011 and 2018, including lacquer paintings, furniture and jewelry cases.

Wenzhi Zhang has committed herself to the research, creation and promotion of lacquer painting for dozens of years. Her works embody a respect and profound understanding of the heritage and art of lacquer works.

Archaeological discoveries suggest that the use of lacquerware in China started as early as in the Neolithic Age 7,500 years ago. People initially used lacquer as a glue to repair and protect the surface of objects. Screens decorated with lacquer only began to appear in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) before becoming commonplace, according to China Daily reports.

The opening ceremony for the exhibition included founder of Art Canton Lu Xiaokun, curator of Lingnan Museum of Fine Art Ye Xiangming, chief curator of Art Canton and renowned art critic Wu Shaoning, director of Nanhai Art Institute Liang Guorong, founder of Foshan Yueyi Art Museum Feng Xiaobao, and other people art collection and education circles.

Zhang will also attend the 2019 Art Canton Contemporary Art Fair which will be held between December 6 and 9 at Hall 5 of the Guangzhou Liuhua Exhibition and Trade Center.
