Co-organized by Guangdong People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the itinerary of Local Impact Day aims at showcasing Guangdong’s culture and development to foreign teenagers by showing them the old and new scenes of Guangzhou.

A trip to such symbolic places will help international youth better understand Guangzhou and China, especially as the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) approaches, according to Zhou Jijun, Secretary General of Guangdong People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

Students in the morning paid a visit to Canton Tower, a symbol of Guangzhou’s new axis, and Yuexiu Park, the mark of the city’s ancient axis. Standing at the top of Canton Tower, the teenagers were excited and couldn’t stop taking photos of the outside view, according to Lorna, one of the volunteer students.

The teenagers spent their afternoon in the Guangzhou Urban Planning Exhibition Center where they learned about Guangzhou through high-tech platforms such as a 4D cinema and VR games. Later, they were divided into seven groups to design posters of the city. After brainstorming and drawing, the students successfully completed their posters all of which presented a love for Guangzhou.

Tijn, a 11-year-old boy from the Netherlands, said the Canton Tower impressed him most because looking out of the tower, he could see the whole of Guangzhou and its beauty.

“I really like Cantonese cuisine, especially the dumplings I ate today. And I like the Guangzhou Urban Planning Exhibition Center, because it’s really modern, and I really like the 4D cinema,” said Ana, a Brazilian girl who was visiting China for the first time.

The Guangzhou trip is only part of a 28-day tour of Guangdong. After the Guangzhou visit, teenagers will return to the Dongguan Camp and continue to learn more about Chinese language and culture.
