Founded on the initiative of a group of 16 persons, at the time comprising both nobility and ordinary citizens, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig orchestra has a history of over 275 years. It is the only orchestra to have performed the nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven while the composer was still alive.
Together with violinist Baiba Skride, conductor Andris Nelsons and the orchestra will bring the Guangzhou audience a special performance on the evening of June 6th. The concert forms part of the 2019 Guangzhou Art Festival.

Of the many celebrated Gewandhauskapellmeister who have directed the Orchestra over the centuries, Johann Adam Hiller, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Arthur Nikisch, Kurt Masur Herbert Blomstedt and Riccardo Chailly are worthy of particular mention. Andris Nelsons assumed the position of 21st Gewandhauskapellmeister in February 2018.
Music lovers over the world treasure the unique sound of the Gewandhausorchester that distinguishes it from all other symphony orchestras. The unmistakable sound and extraordinary diversity of repertoire to which the orchestra devotes itself in its three 'homes' are cultivated through more than two hundred performances each year.
Few orchestras have played such an active, formative role in the development of symphonic music as the Gewandhausorchester - today an orchestra that still attracts the world's most highly celebrated composers, conductors and soloists.
The Gewandhausorchester’s unique contribution to Europe´s historical and current musical wealth was recognised with the award of the European Cultural Heritage Label.
