An event featuring special foods, live music, stage performances and mini games was held by overseas students from Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand (FEAST VIT) at the South China University of Technology University (SCUT) Town Campus on the afternoon of May 24th, attracting a crowd of local students and residents.

The students demonstrated different types of cuisines from their mother countries at the FEAST VIT US night market. Some of the popular foods included Thai milk tea and sweet dumplings with coconut milk, Vietnamese coffee, passion fruit drinks and papaya salad from Vietnam, as well as green rice flour jelly and banana desserts from Indonesia.

Nico Hastanta, the student in charge of the event, explained that all the food and snacks were made by the students themselves based on the original recipes, and some of the ingredients were brought from their homelands. “This dish, Paket Nasi Ayam Geprek, is famous in Indonesia and it tastes really good,” Nico said.

Performances such as singing, traditional and modern dance as well as a fashion show were staged at the event between 5:30pm and 6:30pm, and was well received by the audience.

“We held this activity to gather students from Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand together, so that they can get to know each other and build good relationships,” Nico pointed out.

FEAST VIT, hosted by the School of International Education, South China University of Technology, has been held annually now for several years, aiming to help expat students enjoy their life in Guangdong and promote cross-cultural communication inside the university.
