Three scientists and researchers in Shenzhen were awarded for innovation and entrepreneurship at the Second China National Innovation Awards held in Beijing on Saturday, the National Science and Technology Workers Day.

Li Qingquan, president of Shenzhen University, Zhang Zheng with Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital and Huang Sanwen with the Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen-the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, won the honorary credentials, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

The China National Innovation Awards is an important set of awards following the National Awards for Natural Sciences, National Awards for Technology Inventions and National Awards for Science and Technology Advancement.

Li, a researcher in precision engineering testing and space information sensing, has made contributions in promoting industrialization of science achievements. His high-precision road surveying and testing equipment has been used on urban roads in more than 30 provinces and municipalities. Some related technologies and equipment have been exported to Canada and Australia.

Professor Zhang led his team to make contributions in separating 200 monoclonal antibodies from the novel coronavirus.

Huang engages in plant physiology and applies big data in the breeding of vegetable crops. He participates in many international genomics plans and is a leading scientist in vegetable genomics. Huang made a breakthrough by unveiling the genomic and chemical basis for quality of tomatoes and revolutionized the breeding of potatoes.

The awards, held every three years, are divided into two categories, one for individuals and the other for collectives. It is organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the China Association for Science and Technology.

At the ceremony this year, 10 groups including the team engaged in research of third-generation semiconductors received medals, 28 individuals won decorations and 258 individuals won credentials.

In another development, Yin Ling, an employee with the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was awarded as one of 10 model science workers of 2020 in Guangdong Province at a conference held in Guangdong marking the National Science and Technology Workers’ Day.

Yin and her team started modeling a non-medicinal intervention of the spread of COVID-19 with big data since Jan. 15 after the outbreak.

On Jan. 23, the team provided the first research report to the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention about the imported COVID-19 cases.
