The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Guangzhou campus will break ground by the end of 2019 and start enrollment in this September, according to Cai Chaolin, a deputy to Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress and Party Chief of Nansha, on January 29th.

Located in Nansha of Guangzhou, the new campus covers an area of 1.13 square kilometers and is twice as large as the Hong Kong campus. It’s situated next to the Qingsheng Metro Station and a high speed rail station which enables students to commute between West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong in 35 minutes.

“The construction will have two phrases, and the first phrase is estimated to complete in 2021,” said Cai Chaolin during the ongoing Guangdong annual legislative session, “the campus will start recruitment while the construction and it will adopt the same standards as the main campus. Students will have their semesters first in Hong Kong, then in Nansha once the construction completed.”

Based on the agreement signed between Guangzhou University and HKUST in 2018, the Guangzhou campus will adopt English as its basic language and admit only postgraduate and PhD students in the initial phase. It will open undergraduate courses in the long run with its intake eventually expanding to about 10,000.

Cai Chaolin stressed that the Guangzhou campus will equip facilities that comply with international standards and maintain the same quality as the HK campus. “Students will not only enjoy well-equipped labs in Nansha, but a full industry chain to convert their research achievements, register companies and eventually get the companies public,” he said.
