Expats try their hand at making dim sum

On the afternoon of January 12th, the Taotaoting in the White Swan Hotel was filled with the sound of laughter. ‘A Bite of Guangzhou’ was jointly held by Guangzhou’s Foreign Expert Bureau, the Guangzhou Association for the International Exchange of Personnel, Newsgd.com and the Guangzhou White Swan Hotel.

At the event foreign experts and their families from the UK, United States, Germany, Russia, Canada, Japan and other countries followed the instructions of a dim-sum master chef and tried their hand at making dim-sum themselves.

Tan Guanglin, the head dim-sum chef at the White Swan Hotel, is a master of Cantonese cuisine. He has cooked for Comrade Deng Xiaoping, Queen Elizabeth II and many other heads of state and politicians. He shared his culinary craft and Cantonese culinary culture with the guests.

“The dim-sum in White Swan Hotel is developed from the tradition. I think this kind of activity can let more people especially the youth to know more about the traditional Cantonese culture”, said Tan.

The fun of wrapping rabbit shaped dumplings, and the aroma of steaming dim-sum created a lively atmosphere at the event.


“I like dim-sum, the food in Guangzhou is really good,” said Elena, currently working at the Guangzhou institute of medicine and health. Elena and her family enjoy their life in Guangzhou a lot, “we have lived here for more than three years, my daughter is going to Chinese kindergarten, so she can speak Chinese very well, we love Guangzhou, I could stay here for the rest of my life. ”

“Making dim-sum is lots of fun,” said Felix a German, who is doing an internship in Foshan, he continued, “life in Guangzhou is really good, there is always something to do in Guangzhou, Wechat is super convenient, people are super friendly and helpful in Guangzhou, whenever I have needed help they tried their best to help me.”

“A Bite of Guangzhou” is one of a series activities of "Guangzhou: A home away from home for Global Talent" program in 2019.The program is a service platform built by the Guangzhou government for foreign experts working in China.

With the aim of helping foreign experts find out more about Guangzhou and China, and hope that foreign experts will enjoy working and living in Guangzhou it further promotes the integration of Chinese and foreign cultures. The program has organized various activities and educational lectures. ‘A Bite of Guangzhou’ is one of a series activities held by ‘Guangzhou: A home away from home for Global Talent’ in 2019.
