We have all been touched by a moment or scene and remembered it for a long time. How do you record or display these moments? Guangdong painter Wang Changgan chooses to do that through the form of quick sketch.

Wang Changgan's solo exhibition entitled 'Episode' will be held at the Kui Yuan Gallery in Guangzhou between August 8th and September 7, 2020, featuring dozens of his quick sketch works.

Wang Changgan’s choice comes from his intention to record the real and emotional world he sees with the most concise lines, as well as his wishes to show and explore more possibilities of sketching.

"Quick sketch is the most direct, essential, and fast way of artistic expression to record the feelings of life," Kelvin Huang, curator of the exhibition said in the Foreword, "If it were a genre in literature, it would be the short, succinct but vivid one that briefly describes the meaningful people and things appear in life. It seizes the fleeting events, sceneries, and figures of the person that are currently happening."

Pan Xingjian from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts once wrote that, quick sketch, as a type of sketch, has irreplaceable value which cannot substitute or be substituted by sketch. It has the primary significance for life since it can serve as a record of the relationship between the painter and life, or even directly initiate creation...Quick sketch has its place in the basis for generations of our domestic painters’ success.

Film is a window for Wang Changgan to feel the world and interpret sketches. From high school to college, Wang has always enjoyed watching classic movies, feeling different lives in these movies, some of which has even been watched several times. With the growth of his age and mind, the subject matter of the movies he watched also change and expand. The sketching of film scenes became part of his record and memories of his past life.

The style and characteristics in printmaking works of Wang Changgan are carried on. He once again uses pen and paper to show scenes of happiness and sadness of the bizarre world in the form of quick sketch with his sharpness as a young artist. The precise and smooth outlining, delicate and rich details and layers give these works infinite tension and readability.

The quick sketches of these episodes are the artist’s memories, dreams, and ideas. They are the sentences of the story he is telling at this time, and communicate silently with the viewer. The engaging scenes and moments became eternal when they were painted into the pictures by Wang Changgan with brush and ink.
