A retrospective on the famous Belgian singer Jacques Brel is currently being held on the 7th floor at Guangzhou Library between March 31st and April 19th. The exhibition illustrates Brel’s stories and outstanding career in art via pictures, records and books.
Born in 1929 in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, Jacques Brel was one of the world’s most renowned French speaking singers. Apart from a singer, Brel was also an author, actor, film director and composer. Brel used his performances to reflect the daily life of his country. With true Belgian spirit, he savoured the emotions arising out of daily life.

An opening ceremony was held on the afternoon of March 31st, attended by guests from the library, the Consulate General of Belgium in Guangzhou and other consulates general in Guangzhou.
A recitation of Brel’s lyrics and a sharing session took place after the opening ceremony. At the activity, Mr. Joris Salden, consul general of Belgium in Guangzhou, introduced 10 of Brel’s songs, and then 10 contestants from a previous translation competition of Brel’s lyrics recited their award-winning works.
