The panda couple offered by Chinese Central Government which arrived on April 26 are in good shape, announced Friday the Hong Kong Ocean Park, new permanent home of the pair.
The park's Zoological Operations and Education Division Assistant Director Timothy Ng said at a press conference on Friday that the new pandas, without feeling unwell due to the long trip from China's Sichuan province to Hong Kong, took their first meal after patrolling the new home for an hour since arrival.
The cubs, which were officially named "Le Le" and "Ying Ying" Thursday, have started their 30-day quarantine and will spend another 30 days acclimatizing to the new environment at the park, said Ng.
Vet Wang Chengdong and caretaker He Changgui from Sichuan who followed the pandas to come to Hong Kong said that by observation, the couple seem to be happy with their new home and their eating habit has been normal.
Chairman of the park Allen Zeman said that a blog written by panda caretakers will be open in May to update the public with the latest news of the young couple before they make their first appearance to public on July 1.
A new panda habitat is currently under construction in the park, Zeman said, when it finished in 2008, the cubs will move in together with "An An" and "Jia Jia," another panda couple presented by the central government in 1999.
The young panda couple are gifts to Hong Kong to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland.
