The wait time for Guangzhou Metro Line 3 will be shortened from 12 minutes to 8.5 minutes before Chinese New Year comes.

According to Lu Guanglin, General Manager of the Guangzhou Metro Corporation, the construction of the Guangzhou metro lines is way ahead of the train manufacturing. The inadequate number of serving trains has limited the increase of tube frequency. Currently there are 18 serving trains for Line 3 and 8 for Line 4.

Lu also mentioned that the daily passenger flow has increased from 750,000 persons to 1,100,000 after Line 3 and Line 4 opened. Line 3 and Line 4 opened a year earlier than scheduled. 'The Metro plays a more important role for Guangzhou's transportation after motorcycles were banned from the road. The current service for Line 3 and Line 4 is not ideal, but we decided to open it earlier,' said Lu.

Lu noted that Line 3 has a high passenger flow. We are working to shorten the wait time to 8.5 minutes before Chinese New Year comes. Step by step the wait time will become 6 minutes before Labor Day and then 3 minutes before the end of this year. The opening of Line 4 is the result of the development of Nansha. In contrast with Line 3, Line 4 has started with a low passenger flow and will need a few more years to increase its passenger numbers.
