Sand painting shows are now a peculiar tourism attraction in the Dunhuang scenic area. Using colorful sand from the Singing Sand Dunes of Dunhuang, painters draw sand pictures with their fingers, palms and arms. After a little while, sand paintings will soon be finished on the plates, reflecting Dunhuang frescoes or telling stories of Bibles in vivid verve.
A reporter from the Xinhua News Agency witnessed the whole process of the sand paintings at the viewing sight of the Crescent Moon Spring and Singing Sand Dunes in Dunhuang.
In a 50-square-meter studio holding a handful of colorful sand, a painter waved his arm and moved his fingers softly on the drawing plate. In the following few minutes, the Dunhuang fresco "Fly," nine-colored deer and Adam and Eve from the old Bible stories were jumping onto the plate, delicate and awe-inspiring. The applause thundered forth.
Yan Chun, who is in charge of the Dunhuang Arts Center of Sand Paintings, says the arts center had been built and opened formally in July to both domestic and overseas tourists. There are now three professional sand painters participating at the Dunhuang Arts Center giving fascinating shows to tourists.
