THE annual Shenzhen Spring Festival Flower Expo, the largest of its kind in the city, opened on Aiguo Road in Luohu District yesterday (Jan 24).
More than 500 florists from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and the Pearl River Delta region came to showcase over 5,000 species of flowers and potted plants.
The organizers expect the expo will attract more than 1 million visitors during the five-day event, which will end Saturday, one day before the eve of Chinese lunar New Year.
Shenzhen families often use flowers to decorate their homes during the Spring Festival as they represent good omens and create a more festive atmosphere.
Experts warn some flowers should be placed outdoors since they produce toxins.
Xie Ruixing, a flower engineer with the local landscape research institute, said narcissus, tulip and hyacinth should be placed outdoors. They have toxins in stems, which can cause skin allergies, especially in children, Xie said.
He also advised people to keep a variety of plant species indoors to prevent excessive carbon dioxide.
