Nansha will build railways to connect the Guangzhu (Guangzhou-Zhuhai) Railway, linking the 3 islands of Nansha, Longxue Island, and Wanqingsha as an organic whole. The railway will provide Nansha Port and Wanqingsha Industrial Park with powerful and low-cost transportation to communicate nation-wide.

According to the plan, the Nansha Railway will run 79.279 kilometers in total with an investment estimate totaling RMB 3.96 billion. The Nansha Railway will play a critical role and have a fundamental meaning for Nansha and Panyu districts in their process of becoming comprehensive traffic hubs which communicate with the areas on the banks of the Pearl River and connect with such large and medium cities as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and so on.

According to the project scheme, the Nansha Railway will start at Heshan Station, Jiangmen City, pass Shunde District of Foshan City and Zhongshan City, and finally reach Nansha District of Guangzhou City in the east. Because of the various rivers and the long soft soil regions along the railway, many bridges have to be built. Altogether there are 13 bridges, 2 tunnels and some short tunnels to be built.

According to the transport volume analysis, the transport volume will total 23.85 million tons and 28.07 million tons by the years 2020 and 2030, respectively. Experts initially estimate the long-range annual delivery capacity to be 28 million tons.
