On November 29th a spokesperson for the Guangzhou Transport Council announced that "Guangzhou has 397 bus lines, servicing all areas of the city therefore current public transport capacity is fully able to absorb the 400,000 additional passengers expected to result from the ban on motorcycles".
Next year more adjustments in Guangzhou's local bus routes will be implemented and will focus on increasing services in Huangpu, Luogang, Tianhe and Baiyun districts as well as bettering their networks. Public transport in the outskirts of the city will also be increased as will the ability to transfer from the city proper to routes servicing the outskirts. In the meantime, the planned transfer terminals connecting the Metro and buses are to open between Baiyun, Tianhe and Panyu. These improvements will considerably expand public transport coverage.
Before the 2010 Asian Games, Guangzhou is determined to fully implement the "Smooth Traffic Project". As adequate allocation of transport capacity is the key, Guangzhou will be using GPS tracking systems to control transit operations which display all the operational information onscreen, increasing punctuality of the buses and decreasing the waiting time of passengers.
Guangzhou plans a district bus system connecting Metro terminals making it easy for all citizens to utilize the Metro. The planned joint bus and Metro preferential ticket will be issued soon and it is estimated a much larger percentage of citizens will then be using public transport.
