Construction has begun on Guangzhou Metro Line 5 at a number of sites. On June 26, a record three shielding machines began tunneling works for Guangzhou Metro Line 5.

Three shield sections are currently under construction: one between Datansha and Xichang, with a length of about 1.9 km; one between Xichang and Caonuan Park, with a length of about 2.3 km; and one between Caonuan Park and Taojin Station, with a length of about 2.5 km. The shield between Caonuan Park and Xiaobei Station will pass through a cluster of water-eroded caves and a slightly weathered granite zone, presenting tremendous engineering challenges.

To date, civil engineering work has begun at 36 out of 37 construction sites, (the exception being the Jiaokao Station site) with the Zhujiang New Town and Dasha East Stations largely complete. The main structures of 11 stations are currently under construction, and four shielding machines are performing tunneling for five shield sections. Procurement contracts for the main system equipment for Metro Line 5 have also been awarded to successful bidders.

Under the existing plan, Metro Line 5 will have a length of about 40.5 km and 28 stations.
