Chinese scientists claimed they had found a way to stop the HIV virus from reproducing in human bodies, Xinhua News Agency reported over the weekend.
Scientists with the University of Science and Technology of China said they and their foreign partner had developed a chemical that could stop the HIV virus from attaching to human cells.
HIV virus must attach to human cells before it could multiply in human bodies, said Prof. Wang Zhiyong with the university.
"Our idea is to use something to occupy the position where the HIV virus would attach to human cells. That will block the door for HIV virus and hence stop it from multiplying," said Wang.
"We found the door-blocker after three years' work," said Wang.
The new finding may help develop a vaccine and a new medicine against HIV/AIDS, as current HIV/AIDS medicines are expensive and not effective enough.
