A Shenzhen-based company is close to manufacturing an herbal medicine to suppress HIV.

According to a press release from Shenzhen Jinhuiqiu Hi-Tech Co. Ltd, the company's two-year efforts have successfully extracted something from herbs that can be made into a medicine to suppress HIV.

According to Yang Zhanqiu, a virus expert from the medical college of the Wuhan University, the effect of the herbal extract is similar to that of the AIDS cocktail. But it is better than the latter that is a chemical combination.

"The herb has no side effect and will be much less expensive that the imported AIDS cocktail," said Yang.

According to the press release, the herb has been designated by the State as a healthy food and has no side effect.

The extract has been used in laboratories in China, Australia, Portugal and Japan and the effect was universally positive.

"It proved useful against HIV for different races of people," Yang said.

According to the press release, the company will apply for a clinical trial of the herbal medicine with China's medicine authorities.

Gui Xien, HIV/AIDS consultant with the Ministry of Health of China, was at the press conference showing his support for the new product.
