Till Dec 31st, 2003, Guangzhou has 1241 HIV cases and 141 AIDS cases, among which nearly 70% are drug-takers, releases Guangdong Education Department and Guangzhou Red Cross on a lecture yesterday (Nov 30th).
The first HIV case in Guangzhou was reported in 1986, followed by 1240 more till end of last year, with 57 deaths, among which AIDS cases totaled 141, with 40 deaths. Of all these cases, 82% were mid-ages and youth, 67.3% got HIV through drug use.
Increasing drug-taking population who share needles in drug use becomes a main AIDS-prone group, while people who are having unhealthy sexuality and unprotected sex forms the other.
Vice president of Guangzhou Red Cross carried out an AIDS information test among 6600 Guangdong University students recently, with NO ONE managed to answer all the questions correctly. This indicates AIDS education among youths needs to be enhanced.
