Latest Updated by 2004-11-29 17:08:11

World AIDS Day -- the International Day of action on HIV and AIDS take place every year on December 1st.

The number of HIV carriers in South China's Guangdong Province has exceeded 40,000, according to the latest statistics released from a press conference held by the Health Department of the province on Nov. 28th.

The World AIDS Day should be a warning to us all that AIDS is a tough issue for everyone in Guangdong and the effective way that we can stop its spreading is by creating a more AIDS aware society where everyone could take action against it.

HIV hasn't gone away
China reported about 840,000 HIV carriers in 2003, scattered in 31 municipalities, provinces and autonomous regions, according to the Chinese Center of Disease Control and Prevention. The figure was three times more than that in 2001, with an annual growth rate of 40 per cent in the last two years.

Sex transmission of HIV ten times over 1998
Although blood is still the major way of AIDS virus transmission, the number of carriers transmitted by the other two ways climbs in recent years. Statistics shows that the ratio of sexual infections has soared up to 1.3% in 2003, while in 1998 the percentage is only 0.14%.

The figure is lower than the 4% of druggers, but among them some 15% are female, some of whom would try to get drugs by sex transaction, expresses Lin Peng, Head of the AIDS Control and Prevention Center, Guangdong Center for Disease Control & Prevention.

Say NO to AIDS -- Campaigns in Guangdong
So far, the province has some 145 hospitals that receive and give special treatment to AIDS patients covering 122 counties of the 21 cities, forming a three-level (county/city/province) system of medical treatment in province wide.

The appointed hospitals in Guangzhou the province's capital city include the Guangzhou No. 8 People's Hospital, the 3rd Hospital affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University and the Nanfang Hospital.

More than 50 AIDS patients have been offered free treatment by the No. 8 People's Hospital this month, source releases.

Taishan in Jiangmen Municipality, Yangdong in Yangjiang Municipality and Doumen in Zhuhai Municipality are set by the province as the pilot areas for AIDS prevention and control, where free consultation and examination are offered to pregnant women, free injectors distributed to druggers, and free condemns in the public places like hotels, etc.
