Guangdong began distributing 100,000 free condoms Monday (Nov. 22nd) to residents as World Anti-AIDS Day draws near.
The Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) said the condoms were donated by a Beijing condom producer and would be distributed free over the next month to mark World Anti-AIDS Day on Dec. 1.
The free condoms are available from drug stores between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. in busy areas of major cities such as Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Foshan, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing, Huizhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai.
Xu Ruiheng, head of the CDC, said it was the first time for the CDC to distribute condoms in so many cities.
By October 2003, 4,532 HIV carriers had been reported in Guangzhou, of which 162 were AIDS patients. To date, 49 deaths have been recorded. In the past 10 months, 749 new HIV carriers have been diagnosed. Of these, 18 developed AIDS and one person died. The figure is the fourth highest in China.
Experts say the actual number of HIV carriers in Guangdong probably exceeded 30,000, taking into account cases not diagnosed.
In another development, a new condom tailored for homosexuals will be on sale in China next year.
Statistics show that some 3 to 5 percent of Guangzhou men are homosexual.
